Around the world, millions of people start their mornings with a steaming cup of joe. Whether you enjoy a cappuccino, latte, cold brew, or plain black coffee, you’re not alone in your habits. Though you might gravitate towards it for the caffeine it provides, coffee provides a variety of health benefits when consumed in moderation.
Besides these health benefits that coffee provides, there are other things to consider when choosing how to take your coffee. From the milk and sugar you add to how much caffeine you’re consuming, you can make positive changes to your morning drink.
Milk options: When a barista asks you what type of milk you’d like in your drink, do you pause to consider your choices? Dairy and non-dairy options such as fat-free, low-fat and soy milk are rich in calcium and have positive benefits for bone health. Consider making the switch from whole milk to one of these healthier options next time you order.
Sugar options: Too much added sugar can be consequential to your health. Before pouring it into your cup, consider some natural alternatives that can be used to sweeten your coffee. Agave and honey act as natural sweeteners and can be a tasty way to lower the amount of sugar you add into your morning coffee.
Amount consumed: The average American adult consumes around three cups of coffee a day. Depending on if you’re drinking decaf or adding extra espresso shots to your latte, the amount of caffeine you consume might be too high. The most that is recommended for healthy adults is about 400 milligrams of caffeine, so check the nutrition facts next time you grab a drink.
When you brew your next cup, remember all the benefits of drinking coffee and smile as you make the healthiest choice for you.
